Projects

Project Hurricane and Project Colburn, January 2022 – Present

Leading a nine person interdisciplinary team to design, procure, build and commission two large test rigs (2 x £1m budget). On track to deliver £750k/yr of business benefit and £950k capital savings against budget.

  • Collaborated closely with the Engineering, Test, HSE and Procurement functional leads to identify a workable solution to a novel problem Meggitt would typically outsource.
  • Drafted a proposal to win budget with review up the CEO.
  • Captured lessons learned and adapted standard business processes accordingly.
  • Managed budget, schedule, scope, quality and risk. Flexed plans to manage external impacts.
  • Assigned UK and international suppliers after negotiating cost, schedule, technical requirements and intangibles.
  • Managed stakeholders using governance and communication

Project Bridge, May – December 2021

Leading a four person team to recover a struggling project after a request for help from Executive leadership.

  • Redefined the problem, particularly the cross-functional business requirements.
  • Identified suppliers and collaborated to produce a workable plan.
  • Performed risk assessments (technical, project, safety) and identified contingency plans.
  • Presented the proposal to the senior leadership team and secured required budget.
  • Implemented the change resulting in a £350k/yr saving from reduced external testing.

Product Development Information Systems, January 2020 – May 2021

Working across UK, EU and USA sites and commercial partners to lead development and delivery of business critical data systems (requirements capture, development, trial, deployment, post-launch support). Gleaning information in disparate data sets to enable management decision making. Management of incentive related metrics and senior leaders.

Development of automated self-service tools for data aggregation, analysis and reporting. Acting as SME to support the Finance and HR functions in developing their own systems (sum of the parts models, personnel distributions etc.)

Design & Construction of a Mechanical Metamaterial with Simultaneously Negative Density & Elastic Modulus, 2016 – May 2017

Use of distributed control, sensing and actuation to build a prototype metamaterial capable of simultaneously negative effective density and elastic modulus. The prototype displayed exotic behaviours not seen in conventional materials. My work is now being extended to 2D; beyond the current state of the art. This field has applications in submarine cloaking, earthquake protection and subwavelength focusing super-lenses. My dissertation is available for download here: Dissertation.pdf

Making a Custom Mechanical Watch, May 2016 – February 2017

I have been planning this project for a very long time. I started with a broken Seiko SKX009 which I modified with a new movement, dial, hands, bezel, date wheel, crown stem and crystal.

Construction & Control of Autonomous Satellites Modelling Orbital Formation Flight, September 2015 – May 2016

Specification, construction and programming of three vehicles to operate on a low friction surface using fluid based propulsion. I was responsible for the hardware and low level C++ software used to model orbital satellite formation flying. The dissertation is available for download here: final_group_report.pdf

The ACSE Robotic Search & Rescue Competition, October 2014 – Present

The challenge set was for a group to construct an autonomous robot to traverse a difficult obstacle course while localising itself and planning a route to the end location. This is an optional project requiring good time management to complete alongside my other activities. We experimented with several forms of control including gesture recognition and complete autonomy.

Rapid Controller Prototyping of a Chinook Style Helicopter Model, January 2016 – May 2016

This software based project involves the modelling and design of control algorithms for a model Chinook helicopter. This challenging control problem was solved using both classical and state-space control methods. I enjoyed and continued to work on this project after completing all specified objectives, achieving performance beyond what was required for a 1st class mark.

Engineering ‘You’re Hired’ & Global Engineering Challenge, January 2014 & January 2015

These week-long projects tasked us to solve a real world problem by working in multidisciplinary groups of six. In addition to tackling technical issues, the social, ethical and environmental implications of our solution were also scrutinised. For both weeks I was the lead presenter for my team, winning best presentation for the competition in 2015. These projects allowed us to scrutinise the wider implications of engineering and how best to represent them to non-technical people.

UAV Team Simurq Aeronautics Society, September 2012 – May 2013

I led the design and construction section of the autonomous drone project for Simurq Aeronautics which was completed significantly below budget and flew well until I exceeded my piloting skill.
